Square Dancing is Fun and Friendship Set to Music.
Single? Married? Male? Female?
Do you enjoy people, like to have fun, want some healthy exercise and enjoy music? Then Square dancing is for you! You don't need to be graceful or coordinated. Everyone can do it.
It's not hard to learn how to square dance. But, it's not something you learn overnight. Here's the thing; while you learn, you'll be with some great people - that's us. You'll have lots of fun learning! And, you won't be alone. We typically have 10 or 15 new students each year.
Perhaps you think you know square dancing from your school days. Well, think again. You'll hardly recognize it. There are new dance steps, music that is as old as the 50's and as new as the current hits and some songs that are unique to square dancing.
Square dancers come from all walks of life: doctors, pilots, nurses, company presidents, secretaries, farmers, teachers, etc. When square dancers get together, it doesn't matter what you do. It's "how well can you dance."
Square dancing is movement set to music. It is done in couples, with teams of four couples forming a square. You don't have to be part of a real-life couple to be a "couple" in a square dance. As a matter of fact, square dancing is a great "ice breaker" if you're single "and looking."
You will be taught a series of square dance "calls." A "call" is a pattern of movements. Do different patterns in a continous sequence and you're square dancing. It's that easy.
Your instructor is known as the club "caller." We have one of the best. He's Mike Hoose. To learn more about Mike, check out the Caller page.
Lessons start in September. Lessons are once a week, on Monday evenings, last about 2 hours and cost $4.00 per session. Our regular club members will be there to help you in your learning process. They are called "angels." Not that they are - they're just called that.
Attire during lessons is quite informal. Jeans and T-shirts are fine for women. Instead of T-shirts, men are requested to wear long sleeve shirts. Once you graduate and really get into square dancing, you'll probably want to get regular square dance attire. But, that's up to you.
About half way through the lessons, you will visit other clubs in the area - mostly in Knoxville. You won't go alone. You'll have our regular club members joining you. All the clubs do this. So, don't be concerned if you think you're not quite ready. There will be plenty of other students on the dance floor.
The most important thing is that square dancers are out there for a good time. There are always plenty of laughs. So, you should fit right in!
